Althea officinalis – What are the indications, contraindications, drug interactions?

Althea officinalis (marshmallow) is a demulcent.

Indications:

• Dry cough
• Pharyngitis, tonsillitis
• Gastritis, hyperchlorhydria, peptic ulcer disease, GERD
• Interstitial cystitis

Contraindications:

• Wet cough

Interactions:

• Polysaccharides can decrease absorption of all drugs and should not be taken simultaneously (especially with cardiac glycosides, diuretics, antiarrhythmics, corticosteroids, etc.)
