Apley’s compression test – What is the purpose, indication and relevance?

Apley’s Compression Test: Client is prone with knee flexed to 90°. Practitioner places their hands on the client’s foot and heel, applying compression to the lower leg while rotating the tibia medially and laterally

Purpose:

  • Assess for meniscus pathology

Indications:

  • Knee injury

Relevance:

  • Positive test – typically pain and hyper or hypomobility with compression is indicative of a meniscal injury
