Bechterew’s test – What is the purpose, indication and relevance?

Bechterew’s Test: Client is seated and attempts to extend each leg.

Purpose:

• Assess for disc or joint involvement in back and sciatic pain

Indications:

• Sciatic pain

Relevance:

• Positive test – pain that increases with leg extension (or the maneuver is impossible) is indicative of disc involvement
