Codman’s (drop-arm) test – What is the purpose, indication and relevance?

Codman’s (Drop-Arm) Test: Client is standing. Practitioner adbucts the client’s arm to 90° and ask client to slowly lower arms to neutral position

Purpose:

  • Assess for rotator cuff tear

Indications:

  • Rotator cuff injury
  • Decreased range of motion in shoulder

Relevance:

  • Positive test – inability to lower the arm slowly or severe pain in shoulder is indicative of rotator cuff injury.
