Constitutional hydrotherapy – What are the indications and contraindications?

Constitutional hydrotherapy employs hot, cold or contrasting applications in order to influence local circulation and metabolism.

Indications:

  • Heat: chronic inflammation, muscle tension, immunsuppression
  • Cold: acute inflammation, trigger points, hyperthyroidism (application over the thyroid)
  • Contrast: chronic inflammation, arthritis, infection, immunosuppression, circulatory insufficiency

Contraindications:

  • Hypoesthesia
  • Heat: acute inflammation, fever, edema, malignant disease, hemorrhage, CHF, peripheral vascular disease, MS, DM
  • Cold: heart disease, thermoregulatory problems, Raynaud’s syndrome, cutaneous infections
  • Contrast: heart disease, Raynaud’s syndrome
