Dejerine-Roussy (thalamic pain) syndrome – What are the signs and symptoms, relevant dDx., sequelae, work up, and treatment options?

Dejerine-Roussy syndrome is hypersensitivity to pain as a result of damage to the thalamus.

Sn. & Sx.:

  • Hemianesthesia
  • Allodynia and hyperalgesia
  • Deep painful stimuli
  • Persistent, spontaneous, burning pain contralateral to the lesion

dDx.:

  • Complex regional pain syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia

Sequelae:

  • Impaired social and occupational functioning

Work up:

  • Neurological exam

Tx.:

  • Tricyclic antidepressants (Amitriptyline)
