East’s (Roos’) test – What is the purpose, indication and relevance?

East’s (Roos’) Test: Client is standing and abducts the shoulder to 90°, flexes the elbows to 90°, and rapidly opens and closes their hands for up to 3 minutes.

Purpose:

  • Assess for neurovascular compression in the thoracic outlet

Indications:

  • Cervical, shoulder or upper limb pain
  • Upper limb weakness or paresthesia

Relevance:

  • Positive test – reproducible pain or numbness is indicative of thoracic outlet syndrome
