Ely’s test – What is the purpose, indication and relevance?

Ely’s Test: Client is prone. Practitioner flexes the client’s knee and attempts to bring the heel to the glutes without flexing the hip.

Purpose:

  • Assess rectus femoris shortness

Indications:

  • Low back pain
  • Postural abnormalities

Relevance:

  • Positive test – flexing of the hip and pelvis flexes on the affected side is indicative of a shortened rectus femoris
