Epistaxis – What are the signs and symptoms, relevant dDx., sequelae, work up, and treatment options?

Epistaxis is most commonly caused by trauma (including nose picking) and dry air, but is of more concern in people with bleeding diseases, hypertension and liver disease.

Sn. & Sx.:

  • Anterior bleeding from the nares (posterior bleeding is more severe)

dDx.:

  • Hemoptysis
  • Hematemesis

Sequelae:

  • Potential hemorrhage

Work up:

  • Coagulation studies

Tx.:

  • Pinch nares
  • Herbs: astringents (geranium, Hamamelis, Achillea)
