Fucus vesiculosus – What are the indications, contraindications, drug interactions?

Fucus vesiculosus (kelp, bladderwrack) is an antihypothyroid, nutritive and anti rheumatic. It contains a high amount of iodine and prolonged use may decrease iron, sodium and potassium absorption.

Indications:

  • Hypothyroidism
  • Goiter
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

Contraindications:

  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
  • Iodine-induced thyroid conditions
  • Iron deficiency
  • Pregnancy and lactation

Interactions:

  • May potentiate hypothyroid drugs
