Gaenslen’s test – What is the purpose, indication and relevance?

Practitioner flexes hip and knee of unaffected leg with one hand, bringing it towards the patient’s chest, while applying pressure to affected leg, hyperextending the hip.
Purpose:
- Assess hip or sacroiliac joint dysfunction
Indications:
- Low back pain
Relevance:
- Positive test – reproducible pain in the lower back is indicative of sacroiliac joint dysfunction
