Gingivitis – What are the signs and symptoms, relevant dDx., sequelae, work up, and treatment options?

Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gum tissue and is a non-destructive periodontal disease caused by plaque build-up. Associated with poor hygiene, high sugar diet, dental problems, diabetes, folic acid deficiency, and scurvy.

Sn. & Sx.:

  • Inflammation and erythema of the gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Loss of normal gingival contour
  • Halitosis
  • Dental plaque

dDx.:

  • Oral lichen planus
  • Pemphigoid
  • Systemic lupus erythematous

Sequelae:

  • Periodontitis
  • Necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis

Work up:

  • Clinical exam

Tx.:

  • Proper oral hygiene
