Hawkins-Kennedy (Neer’s) test – What is the purpose, indication and relevance?

Hawkins-Kennedy Test: Client is seated with shoulder flexed anteriorly and elbow flexed to 90°. Using the forearm as a lever, the practitioner medially rotates the humerus, compressing the supraspinatus tendon against the coracoid process of the scapula.

Purpose:

  • Assess for rotator cuff impingement by the supraspinatus tendon

Indications:

  • Rotator cuff injury
  • Decreased range of motion in the shoulder

Relevance:

  • Positive test – pain in the lateral aspect of the shoulder is indicative of rotator cuff impingement by the supraspinatus tendon
