Herpangina – What are the signs and symptoms, relevant dDx., sequelae, work up, and treatment options?

Herpangina is an infection of the mouth caused by coxsackie or echovirus, and is usually seen in infants and young children. It is typically self-limiting.

Sn. & Sx.:

  • Systemic symptoms (fever, malaise, anorexia)
  • Sore throat
  • Oral vesicles, ulcers
  • Blisters on the posterior pharynx (behind the pharyngeal pillars)
  • Grey papulovesicular lesions with erythematous base on uvula

dDx.:

  • Herpes simplex
  • Aphthous stomatitis

Sequelae:

  • Dehydration

Work up:

  • Clinical exam
  • Viral culture

Tx.:

  • Symptomatic relief (cold drinks, ice cream)
