Herpangina – What are the signs and symptoms, relevant dDx., sequelae, work up, and treatment options?
January 5, 2021 5:27 amHerpangina is an infection of the mouth caused by coxsackie or echovirus, and is usually seen in infants and young children. It is typically self-limiting.
Sn. & Sx.:
- Systemic symptoms (fever, malaise, anorexia)
- Sore throat
- Oral vesicles, ulcers
- Blisters on the posterior pharynx (behind the pharyngeal pillars)
- Grey papulovesicular lesions with erythematous base on uvula
dDx.:
- Herpes simplex
- Aphthous stomatitis
Sequelae:
- Dehydration
Work up:
- Clinical exam
- Viral culture
Tx.:
- Symptomatic relief (cold drinks, ice cream)
