Hibb’s test – What is the purpose, indication and relevance?

Hibb’s (Prone Gapping) Test: Client is prone with knee flexed to 90°, practitioner internally rotates the hip by pulling the ankle laterally and while stabilizing the sacroiliac joint.

Purpose:

  • Assess for posterior sacroiliac ligament pathology or piriformis contracture

Indications:

  • Low back pain

Relevance:

  • Positive test – pain or reduced mobility at the sacroiliac joint is indicative of SI joint or ligament pathology.
