Iodine – What are the indications and contraindications?
January 5, 2021 5:05 amIodine is found in fish, clams, kelp, eggs and iodized products (salt, bread). It is a mucolytic, is implicated in thyroid function, and converts other forms of estrogen to estriol. Iodine has been shown to cause hypothyroidism and goiters at dosages of > 1 mg qd.
Indications:
- Pulmonary conditions (COPD, cystic fibrosis)
- Chronic sinusitis
- Fibrocystic breast disease
- Breast cancer prevention
- Hypothyroidism, thyrotoxicosis
- Sarcoidosis
Contraindications:
- Acne
- Hyperthyroidism
- Pregnancy and lactation
- Neonates
