Iodine – What are the indications and contraindications?

Iodine is found in fish, clams, kelp, eggs and iodized products (salt, bread). It is a mucolytic, is implicated in thyroid function, and converts other forms of estrogen to estriol. Iodine has been shown to cause hypothyroidism and goiters at dosages of > 1 mg qd.

Indications:

  • Pulmonary conditions (COPD, cystic fibrosis)
  • Chronic sinusitis
  • Fibrocystic breast disease
  • Breast cancer prevention
  • Hypothyroidism, thyrotoxicosis
  • Sarcoidosis

Contraindications:

  • Acne
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Pregnancy and lactation
  • Neonates
