Lasegue’s test (straight-leg raise) – What is the purpose, indication and relevance?

Straight Leg raise: Client is supine with the affected leg extended and internally rotated. Practitioner raises the leg, flexing the hip until pain is felt

Purpose:

  • Assess the cause of low back pain or dysfunction

Indications:

  • Sciatic pain
  • Low back pain

Relevance:

  • Positive test – lumbar pain after 70° is indicative of nerve root compression due to lumbar or SI joint dysfunction (0-35°: SI strain/sprain or piriformis spasm, 35-70°: sciatica, lumbosacral strain/sprain)
