Matricaria recutita – What are the indications, contraindications, drug interactions?

Matricaria recutita (chamomile) is a carminative, anti-inflammatory, vulnerary, antispasmodic, and anxiolytic.

Indications:

  • Unproductive fever
  • Pharyngitis, tonsillitis
  • Dyspepsia
  • Gas, flatulence
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Infant colic
  • Gastroenteritis
  • Smooth muscle spasm
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Topically for skin ulcers, wounds

Contraindications:

  • High fever
  • Gastritis, hyperchlorhydria, peptic ulcer disease, GERD

Interactions:

  • As with all herbs that affect intestinal transit time, Matricaria can alter absorption of drugs and should not be taken simultaneously (especially with cardiac glycosides, diuretics, antiarrhythmics, corticosteroids, etc.)
