McMurray’s test – What is the purpose, indication and relevance?

McMurray’s Test: Client is supine. Practitioner places one hand along the knee joint, the other hand holds the sole of the foot. Practitioner flexes the knee and hip to 90°, and provides a valgus force, externally rotating the tibia and the extending the knee. Practitioner performs the same action providing a varus force.

Purpose:

  • Assess for meniscus pathology

Indications:

  • Restricted range of motion in the knee
  • Knee injury

Relevance:

  • Positive test – pain and/or clicking in the knee is indicative of meniscus pathology
