Otosclerosis – What are the signs and symptoms, relevant dDx., sequelae, work up, and treatment options?

Otosclerosis is a fusion of the stapes footplate to the oval window, diminishing vibration. It is a genetic trait, and can be triggered by increased estrogen periods, such as during pregnancy.

Sn. & Sx.:

  • Progressive conductive hearing loss
  • Pulsatile tinnitus

dDx.:

  • Chronic otitis media
  • Presbycusis
  • Labyrinthitis
  • Cholesteatoma
  • Tympanosclerosis

Sequelae:

  • Hearing loss

Work up:

  • Otoscopic exam

Tx.:

  • Hearing aid
