Oxymetazoline – What are the indications and contraindication?

Oxymetazoline is a locally acting alpha adrenergic agonist with sympathomimetic activity.

Indications:

  • Nasal congestion

Contraindications:

  • Glaucoma
  • Hypertension
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Diabetes
  • Genitourinary obstruction, urinary retention, BPH
  • Concomitant use of MAO inhibitors

From a pharmacognosy perspective, Euphrasia officinalis and Larrea tridentata are useful herbs in treating hay fever.
