Patellar grind test – What is the purpose, indication and relevance?

Patellar Grind Test: Client is supine. Practitioner places their hand on the patella, pushing downwards while patient contacts quadriceps.

Purpose:

  • Assess for patellofemoral syndrome

Indications:

  • Patellar pain
  • Suspected chondromalacia patella or patellar injury

Relevance:

  • Positive test – pain or crepitus with movement of the patella is indicative of patellofemoral dysfunction
