Patrick’s (Fabere) test – What is the purpose, indication and relevance?

Patrick’s (Fabere) Test: Client is supine. Practitioner positions affected hin in flexion, abduction, and external rotation with the knee flexed, resting the foot on the opposite thigh just above the knee (creating a figure 4). Practitioner presses the flexed knee down toward the table while stabilizing the opposite ASIS.

Purpose:

  • Assess hip or sacroiliac joint pathology

Indications:

  • Low back pain
  • Restricted range of motion in the hip

Relevance:

  • Positive test – flexion of the affected hip higher off the table than the unaffected hip is indicative of sacroiliac joint pathology
  • Pain in the groin indicates hip pathology while pain in the sacroiliac regian indicates pathology of the sacroiliac joint

*Faber stands for Flexion, Abduction, External rotation
