Phenylephrine – What are the indications and contraindications?

Phenylephrine is a selective alpha-I adrenergic receptor agonist used orally or intranasally.

Indications:

  • Nasal congestion

Contraindications:

  • Glaucoma
  • Hypertension
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Diabetes
  • Genitourinary obstruction, urinary retention, BPH
  • Concomitant use of MAO inhibitors

From a pharmacognosy perspective, Euphrasia officinails, Larrea tridentata and Sambusuc nigra are useful herbs in treating hay fever.
