Sambucus nigra flower is a diaphoretic, anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic, while the fruit is an antiviral.

Indications:

  • Unproductive fever
  • Pharyngitis, tonsillitis
  • Hay fever (allergic conjunctivitis, rhinitis or sinusitis)
  • Upper respiratory tract infection (fruit)
  • Influenza (fruit)

Contraindications:

  • Productive fever

Interactions:

  • None

From a pharmacology perspective, beta-lactam inhibitors (Penicillin, Cefdinir, Cephalexin), protein synthesis inhibitors (Clindamycin, Doxycycline), and nucleic acid inhibitors (Ciprofloxacin, Azithromycin, Sulfamethoxazole-Trimethoprim) are useful in treating infections.
