Shoulder depression test – What is the purpose, indication and relevance?

Shoulder Depression Test: Client is seated. Practitioner laterally flexes the client’s neck while depressing the contralateral shoulder.

Purpose:

  • Assess for nerve root compression or brachial plexus lesion

Indications:

  • Cervical, shoulder or upper limb pain

Relevance:

  • Positive test – increased pain is indicative of nerve root compression
