Talar Tilt test – What is the purpose, indication and relevance?

Talar Tilt Test: Client is seated. Practitioner uses one hand to hold the ankle, stabilizing the leg and foot, while the other hand tilts the talas. Practitioner adducts and inverts the calcaneus, applying a varus force, then abducts and everts the calcaneus, applying a valgus force.

Purpose:

  • Assess integrity of the anterior talofibular and calcaneofibular ligament

Indications:

  • Ankle or foot injury

Relevance:

  • Positive test – pain or laxity in the ligament is indicative of injury to both ehe anterior talofibular and calcaneofibular ligaments
