Telescoping test – What is the purpose, indication and relevance?

Telescoping Test: Client is supine. Practitioner flexes the hips and knees to 90°, placing downward pressure on the knee, pushing the femur into the examining table.

Purpose:

  • Assess for dislocation of the hip

Indications:

  • Hip trauma

Relevance:

  • Positive test – excessive movement is indicative of dislocation.
