Thomas’ test – What is the purpose, indication and relevance?

Purpose:
- Assess flexion contracture
Indications:
- Restricted range of motion in the hip
Relevance:
- Positive test – compensatory flexion of the contralateral hip is indicative of iliopsoas pathology
- Abduction of the hip during the test is consistent with a tight/short tensor fascia lata
