Thomas’ Test: Client is supine with both hips extended. Client flexes one hip, bringing their knee to their chest and holds it there

Purpose:

  • Assess flexion contracture

Indications:

  • Restricted range of motion in the hip

Relevance:

  • Positive test – compensatory flexion of the contralateral hip is indicative of iliopsoas pathology
  • Abduction of the hip during the test is consistent with a tight/short tensor fascia lata
