Trendelenburg test – What is the purpose, indication and relevance?

Trendelenbers’s Sign: Client is standing and balances on one leg, lifting the other foot off the floor, and attempts to keep their pelvis aligned.

Purpose:

  • Assess gluteus medius dysfunction

Contraindications:

  • Gait disturbances

Relevance:

  • Positive test – lowering of the ilium of the non-weight bearing leg is indicative of weakened hip abductors (gluteus medius and minimus)
