Ulmus rubra (slippery elm) is a demulcent.

Indications:

  • Dry cough
  • Pharyngitis, tonsillitis
  • Gastritis, hyperchlorhydria, peptic ulcer disease, GERD
  • Lower UTI

Contraindications:

  • Wet cough

Interactions:

  • Polysaccharides can decrease absorption of all drugs and should not be taken simultaneously (especially with cardiac glycosides, diuretics, antiarrhythmics, corticosteroids, etc.)
