Valgus (medial) stress test for the knee – What is the purpose, indication and relevance?

Valgus (Medail) Stress Test: Client is supine, practitioner holds client’s leg with knee extended and relaxed, and applies medial pressure to the lateral knee. The test is repeated with the knee in slight flexion.

Purpose:

  • Assess integrity of the medial collateral ligament of the knee

Indications:

  • Knee injury

Relevance:

  • Positive test – pain or excessive ligament laxity in medial collateral ligament is indicative of medical collateral ligament injury
