What is the clinical significance of hemoptysis with heart murmur on auscultation?
August 31, 2020 12:28 amHemoptysis is a common feature of mitral stenosis (which will produce an apical diastolic rumble), as it can cause pulmonary edema and pulmonary hypertension, leading to rupture of the bronchial veins.
Pulmonary embolism can produce the same symptoms by the reverse mechanism; clogging of the pulmonary arteries or veins can cause congestion and pulmonary hypertension, leading to right ventricular dysfunction (often causing elevated JVP and increased heart sounds that are worse with inspiration).
