What is the difference between Ipratropium Bromide and Tiotropium Bromide?

Both drugs are quaternary ammonium derivatives of atropine, acting as anticholinergic agents. They are non-selective competitive antagonists of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, which cause local bronchial inhibition to the parasympathetic nervous system when inhaled resulting in bronchodilation and reduced bronchial secretions.

The difference between both drugs is that Ipratropium Bromide is short-acting while Tiotropium Bromide is long-acting. Ipratropium Bromide can be used in combination with Salbutamol (Albuterol) for acute severe asthma or COPD.
