Constipation is defined as infrequent bowel movements (typically less three times per week), often with difficulty or straining during defecation. The most common cause is inadequate fiber or fluid intake.

Obstructive causes:

  • Colorectal cancer
  • Stricture 
  • Extrinsic compression
  • Rectocele

Metabolic causes:

  • Diabetes
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Hypercalcemia, hypokalemia

Neurological causes:

  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Stroke

Collagen vascular disease:

  • Scleroderma
  • Dermatomyositis

Iatrogenic causes:

  • Narcotics
  • Antidepressants
  • Calcium channel blockers
