Yergason’s test – What is the purpose, indication and relevance?

Yergasonn’s Test: Client is seated with their arm adducted and their elbow in 90° flexion, wrist pronated. Practitioner palpates the long head of the biceps tendon and resists as client attempts to supinate and laterally rotate their arm.

Purpose:

  • Assess stability of the transverse humeral ligament

Indications:

  • Shoulder instability
  • Shoulder injury
  • ‘Clicking’ sound with shoulder movement

Relevance:

  • Positive test – subluxation of the tendon from the bicipital groove is indicative of instability of the transverse humeral ligament
