Niacin and niacinamide (vitamin B3) is found in organ meats, poultry, fish, dairy, whole grains, almonds and legumes. Niacin is primarily used in the treatment of dyslipidemia and is the only agent that lowers Lipoprotein (a). It is also the precursor to glucose tolerance factor, which is required for insulin to bind and transport glucose into the cells, and is therefore useful in improving both blood glucose regulation and insulin sensitivity. Niacinamide is primarily used for psychiatric conditions and osteoarthritis. Niacin and niacinamide should always be supplemented in conjunction with other B vitamins (especially B12 and folate) to avoid hyperhomocysteinemia. Niacin is synergistic and HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, can potentiate the vasodilatory and hypotensive effects of adrenergic antagonists, and may decrease the effectiveness of oral hypoglycemics.

Indications:

  • Migraine
  • Niacin: hypercholesterolemia, hyperlipidemia, diabetes
  • Niacinamide: schizophrenia, osteoarthritis, dermatological conditions

Contraindications:

  • Hepatic disease
  • Pregnancy
